The Town of Putnam Valley, located in the foothills of the Taconic Mountains, was originally named Quincy and was part of Dutchess County. The Mohican Wappinger Tribe members were its first inhabitants. Today's Putnam Valley is known as the “Town of Lakes.” Roaring Brook Lake and Lake Peekskill are non-motorboat lakes. The largest, Lake Oscawana, is a 430 acre lake which borders Fahnstock Park's 600 acres of protected parkland. The Appalachian Trail also crosses Putnam Valley.
